Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a crucial role in various bodily functions, including the regulation of mood and mental wellbeing. While it’s not a direct cure for mood disorders, research suggests that magnesium can influence your mood in several ways. Lets see how Magnesium is key for stress and anxiety.
- Neurotransmitter Regulation: Magnesium helps to regulate neurotransmitters, which are chemical messengers in the brain that play a role in mood regulation. It can enhance the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that has calming effects, and reduce the activity of glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter associated with stress and anxiety.
- Stress and Anxiety Reduction: Magnesium reduces stress and anxiety symptoms. Magnesium influences the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and is involved in the our body’s stress response. Adequate magnesium levels may help regulate the release of stress hormones like cortisol, promoting a calmer state. We also burn through magnesium as a result of stress and anxiety.
- Depression Management: Studies show a link between low magnesium levels and depressive symptoms. Magnesium has been shown to improve symptoms in individuals with depression, although further research is needed.
- Sleep Quality: Sufficient magnesium levels are associated with better sleep quality. Sleep problems and insomnia can negatively impact mood and contribute to the development of mood disorders. Magnesium’s role in regulating neurotransmitters and reducing stress may promote better sleep, indirectly influencing mood.
Whilst magnesium supports mood and mental well-being, it’s not a standalone treatment for severe mood disorders. If you are experiencing severe mood disorder please speak with your health professional.
